Today, more than ever, society is trying to get healthy again, ditching those COVID habits and lockdown pounds. It can be overwhelming and downright confusing trying to figure out how to start a new, healthier way of life. There are so many diet and weight loss ads and fitness influencers out there, promising "get fit fast" programs and products. Even if the weight comes off quickly, it's not a sustainable way to live. Many of these gimmicks slow down your metabolism, leaving you more frustrated and feeling more defeated than before you started.
There is a way, and truly one way only: hard work. You put in the hard work, you get your dream results. The weight didn't come on quickly. It crept up, appearing seemingly out of nowhere. It's not going anywhere quickly either. But here's the good news: investing in a new way of healthy living doesn't have to feel like hard work or require you to give up everything you love. Eating the proper nutrition is a key first step. If you calculate your macronutrients (carbs, fats, proteins) to your requirements and according to your goals, you'll find that it is very easy to eat delicious foods, feel full all day and with workout consistency, you will see results. Not only will you see these changes rather quickly, you will feel better, have more energy, and these results will last!
Creating new healthy habits is the next step. Give yourself three weeks to develop a new habit. Once you start, don't give up. Life throws curveballs: injuries, illnesses, etc. but it's so important to get back to your fitness routine as soon as possible. Cardiovascular fitness is the first to go. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, physiological changes — like blood lipoproteins, ability to use glucose for energy and body composition — can occur one or two weeks after you stop exercising. Strength training, however, tends to have lasting effects. A recent Men's Health article states "the body is an amazingly adaptable machine, and that adaptability works both ways. Muscle is expensive from an energy standpoint, and if your body senses that you don’t need it, you won’t maintain that mass. But the body also doesn’t forget. Muscle memory is a real thing, so if your hiatus lasts a bit longer than three weeks, don’t beat yourself up—you’ll likely regain your size and strength faster than it took you to build it in the first place."
Create SMART goals: SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC, and TIMELY. Unrealistic goals can lead to taking on programs that are beyond your capability or feel too overwhelming, thus causing you to give up before seeing any results. When setting SMART goals, think about ability, time limitations, fitness level, and lifestyle. Eat breakfast every day. Get an accountability partner if necessary. Hire a coach to keep an eye on your progress.
Getting your dream body is only part of it. Imagine getting off of medications because you are finally healthy again. Imagine having the energy to want to run and play with your kids. Imagine finally getting into those skinny jeans and damn girl, that booty is lifted! Nice work! ;) You can transform your body into anything you want. BUT it requires putting in the work and having patience and faith in the process. Nothing lasting comes quickly, but it is absolutely possible to change, no matter how long it's been since you've worked out, no matter your age.
